Statement for Holly Fay’s work included in Transmissions

The cosmos is within us. We are made of star-stuff. We are a way for the universe to know itself.”

“The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of star stuff”.

– Carl Sagan

Patterns within the cosmos are reflected in the earth’s natural systems.

In this drawing from my Cosmos Series, graphite (the mineral form of carbon—found on Earth and in space, and which all life is based on) is layered throughout, using both additive and subtractive processes, the medium is built up to suggest cloud formations—either earthly or interstellar. Subject matter is void of defined contours in order to suggest continual flux. Linear marks in the picture plane evoke the multidimensional aspects of physical space and the transitory qualities of time and energy. Vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines, both drawn and incised, are used to indicate energy / light.
